Orange Spring Mound is located in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park, WY. The Mammoth Hot Springs area is a complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine It was created as hot water from the spring cools and deposits calcium carbonate. The magnificent colors in the hot water flowing out of the ground is caused by various types of algae. As magma heated hot water flows out, and down the sides of the mounds, the water cools. This algae shows shades of brown, orange, red, and green where each color comes from a different type of algae that can only live in a narrow temperature band of the water. Over time water volume changes and the Calcium Carbonate builds up the mounds causing the water to cool at different rates or take different paths down the hillside. As this happens the algae moves with it and is thus constantly changing the colors that appear in different locations.
